The Fascinating History of the Buckwheat Pillow
Pillows have been around for many centuries. The first known use of them was found in tombs that were located in the oldest parts of Egypt. In China, the first decorated pillows were made. They had some competition from the Persians and these highly creative pillows were much sought after and were even used for trade purposes. The buckwheat pillow found its start over two hundred years ago in the Orient before moving across Europe, into Canada and finally the United States.
Ancient Egyptians were the forerunners of many of the modern things we use every day. They were the first to recognize the need for more comfortable sleeping arrangements. This meant supporting the head and neck during times of slumber. This was so vital to these people that they would even put pillows under the head of the dead to make sure they were comfortable for the final slumber.
When other countries invaded Egypt, they took this concept with them. They began to feel the effects of having a pillow when sleeping. They slept deeper and better and woke up feeling more refreshed. The pillow then made its way to the Orient where it took another form entirely.
In China and Persia the pillows were not only used as a way to support the head, they were also used as a form of art. They were highly decorative and it could be said that the “throw pillow” originated here. These pillows become so sought after that there was a market for them. There were crafters whose only job was to decorate pillows. The more decorative, the more value they had in trade.
Around two hundred years ago, buckwheat hull pillows were commonly used in the Orient. The buckwheat hull is the part that is left over after the buckwheat has been milled. Once cleaned properly, the buckwheat provided a clean and supportive way to get a good night’s sleep.
As was typical of the time period, all good things that came out of the Orient made their way to Europe through trade. The same can be said about the buckwheat pillow. The first organic buckwheat pillows in Europe came from this area.
The pillows then made their way across the Atlantic and into Canada and finally the United States. Today, buckwheat pillows are becoming very popular. Many people understand the need to have a good night’s sleep. One way to achieve this is by using a buckwheat pillow. Some people say that it can take some getting used to at first. They also say that in the long run they are glad that they did take the time as they have never slept better in their lives.
While pillows have been around for close to a thousand years, the buckwheat pillow is a relatively new concept being only two hundred years old. They have finally made their way to the United States where they are gaining in popularity for their comfort and support.
